City of Portland employees to get MORE VACATION TIME thanks to Local 17 member-led initiative!

On July 18, Portland City Council approved an ordinance that will change the vacation accrual policy for all City employees, giving everyone more vacation leave starting in 2019!

This initiative is due in large part to the dedication of Local 17 member leaders who have worked hard over the last eight months to put together a comprehensive overhaul of the accrual system. This was a top priority of our members in last year's contract survey.

So, how much more vacation will YOU get in 2019?

Do You Know About the Attendance Incentive?

Convert some of your sick leave to vacation leave!

NOTE: Good news! The attendance incentive was increased from 15% to 25% in your 2017-2021 contract! This means that now you can request to convert 25% of your sick leave to vacation if you meet the requirements outlined in this video. (The video was made in 2015 and references the previous amount of 15% that was available for conversion.)

Check out our award-winning video* - starring some of your fellow Local 17 COPPEA Chapter members - that talks about the Attendance Incentive, a benefit in your contract that allows a percentage of unused annual sick leave to be converted to vacation leave.

*This video won second place in the Educational/Training Video category of the International Labor Communications Association 2016 Media Awards!

Paid Parental Leave

Great news! The City of Portland’s new Paid Parental Leave will go into effect and be available to all PTE Local 17 COPPEA Chapter members on Jan. 1, 2016!

This new leave policy allows for 6 weeks of paid leave for a newborn child, newly adopted child, or newly placed foster child. The qualifying event (child’s birth or placement) must occur on or after Jan. 1, 2016 -- the paid leave is not retroactive. If you are also using FMLA, then the paid leave must be used concurrently with FMLA and prior to using other types of leave (sick, vacation, unpaid).

If you have other questions, please see the list of Frequently Asked Questions prepared by the City.
