Local 17 Supports the Occupy Movement - What you can do

Across the state and the nation, a diverse group is beginning a non-violent, extended public occupation of downtown cities including Bellingham, Olympia, Portland, Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma and Yakima (and more to come). The occupation is part of a national movement that started with the Occupy Wall Street resistance movement in New York City. (In fact, unions in Seattle are collecting supplies, click here to read more).

On Oct. 11, Local 17's Executive Board unamiously voted to endorse and affirm the Occupy Movement. Consistent with this, the Executive Board took steps to actively show support with in-kind donations and monetary contributions where feasible. It also authorized the use of the union's communication channels to encourage members to support and participate in the Occupy Movement and related activities.

By joining the nationwide Occupy movement, you help remind elected officials and the voting public on the majority's desire to take our government and country back from the big money interests that currently hold undue sway over decisions affecting us all. People are coming together in large numbers to affect this change. You can join the occupation site in any of the downtowns for as much time as you have: an hour, a day, overnight. You can also donate money or supplies. For more information or to find out what you can do go to your community's page:
