17A Enters Negotiations

The 17A collective bargaining agreement is set to expire April 30, 2011. The bargaining unit has elected its bargaining team (see below) and an online survey was recently completed. The survey results will be instrumental in providing guidance and direction to the bargaining team.

While few changes are needed in the contract, Article 15 pertaining to Layoffs is a major area of concern. Given the drastic cuts in DDES for the past several years and the upcoming layoffs in Roads, it is imperative the language be more clear on bumping and qualifications, in particular. Negotiations have begun with one session dedicated to an Interest Based Bargaining approach for the Reduction in Force, Article 15.

The County and Union have shared interests in making the layoff process fair and predictable and the next steps are to agree upon language to that effect. Updates will be posted as negotiations progress. Stay tuned!
