Sept. 2010 - King Co. Court Reporters Fight to Stay in Courtrooms
King County Court Reporters have launched a campaign to help keep court reporters in the courtrooms instead of moving to the use of electronic sound recorders.
Court reporters argue that the system is extremely inaccurate, inaudible and unintelligible and will actually cost more money in the long run to correct mistakes.
Local 17 Union Representative Whitney Hupf said members are currently working on a petition for lawyers to sign in support of court reporters' work and Local 17 has been writing letters to judges and other important decision makers. Hupf also filed a grievance regarding the use of electronic equipment and using employees, other than court reporters, to run the equipment which creates the official record.
Additionally, members and Local 17 are also working with their professional association, Washington Court Reporters Association, on a letter writing campaign and a video.
The court reporters at the county and have been issued preliminary layoff notices. |
